Frequently Asked Questions
Is it really free?
Yes. BLIP is a law school clinic, not a firm that charges fees. If we take your matter, our representation costs you nothing. (You may still owe third-party costs like government filing fees, and we'll always tell you about those up front.)
Who supervises the work?
Every matter is supervised by licensed faculty. Our supervising attorneys have practiced at firms like Davis Polk & Wardwell and bring decades of experience in IP, patent, privacy, and legal tech.
Are the students actually qualified?
Our student attorneys are law students at Brooklyn Law School, selected for this clinic and trained in the practice areas they work in. They handle real clients and file real documents, always under faculty supervision. This is how lawyers have been trained for generations.
Who's eligible?
Founders, creators, small organizations, and early-stage ventures who can't afford private counsel and whose work touches technology, the internet, or the digital economy. Most of our clients are in and around New York.
What happens at a consultation?
We learn what you're building, you ask us anything, and we tell you honestly whether we're a fit. It's free, and there's no obligation to move forward.
Is it confidential?
Conversations with the clinic once you're a client are treated with the confidentiality the attorney-client relationship requires. Note that emailing us or booking a consultation does not by itself create that relationship. See Terms & Privacy. What don't you do? We're a tech and startup clinic. We generally don't handle criminal matters, personal injury, family law, or areas outside our focus. If we can't help, we'll try to point you somewhere that can.

Welcome to the website of the Brooklyn Law Incubator & Policy Clinic ("BLIP," "the Clinic," "we," "us," or "our"), an in-house clinic of Brooklyn Law School. By accessing or using this website (the "Site"), you agree to these Terms of Use. If you do not agree, please do not use the Site.
The Site, including all articles, guides, resources, and other content, is provided for general informational and educational purposes only. It is not legal advice and is not a substitute for advice from a licensed attorney in your jurisdiction. Laws change and vary by location and situation; do not act, or refrain from acting, based on anything on this Site without seeking professional counsel about your specific circumstances.
Using this Site, reading its content, subscribing to our newsletter, submitting an intake form, booking a consultation, or emailing the Clinic does not create an attorney-client relationship between you and BLIP, its student attorneys, faculty, Brooklyn Law School, or any of their representatives. An attorney-client relationship is formed only if and when the Clinic expressly agrees in writing to represent you or your organization in a specific matter.Do not send confidential or time-sensitive information through this Site, an intake form, or unsolicited email. Information you submit before the Clinic has agreed to represent you may not be treated as confidential and does not obligate the Clinic to take your matter. If you have an urgent legal deadline, consult a licensed attorney promptly; the Clinic cannot guarantee timely review of intake submissions.
BLIP is a teaching law firm in which law students, supervised by licensed faculty, provide pro bono legal services to qualifying clients. Submitting an intake form or requesting a consultation is a request only — it does not guarantee that the Clinic will evaluate, accept, or represent you. The Clinic selects clients at its discretion, including based on fit with its educational mission, subject-matter focus, capacity, conflicts of interest, and eligibility criteria. The Clinic may decline any matter for any lawful reason.
You agree to use the Site only for lawful purposes. You will not: (a) use the Site in any way that violates applicable law or regulation; (b) attempt to gain unauthorized access to the Site, its servers, or connected systems; (c) interfere with or disrupt the Site's operation or security; (d) use automated means to scrape, harvest, or collect data from the Site except as permitted by our robots file; or (e) misrepresent your identity or affiliation.

This Privacy Policy explains how the Brooklyn Law Incubator & Policy Clinic ("BLIP," "we," "us") collects, uses, and shares information when you use our website, subscribe to our newsletter, submit an intake form, or book a consultation.
Information you provide to us:
Intake and consultation requests: your name, email address, phone number (if provided), and the information you choose to share about yourself, your venture or organization, and the legal matter you're asking about.
Newsletter signup ("The Loop"): your email address, and any name you provide.
Correspondence: the contents of emails or messages you send us.
Information collected automatically: when you visit the Site, our providers may automatically collect standard technical data such as your IP address, browser type, device information, pages viewed, referring pages, and timestamps, using cookies and similar technologies.
We use the information we collect to: respond to your inquiries; evaluate whether your matter is a fit for the Clinic and, if accepted, provide legal services; schedule and conduct consultations; send you The Loop and other communications you request; operate, maintain, secure, and improve the Site; and comply with legal obligations.
We do not sell your personal information. We share it only as follows:
Service providers ("processors"): companies that operate the Site and its features on our behalf, including beehiiv (website hosting and newsletter delivery) and Calendly (consultation scheduling). These providers process data under their own terms and privacy policies and only to provide their services to us.
Within Brooklyn Law School / the Clinic: with faculty, supervising attorneys, and student attorneys as needed to evaluate and handle inquiries and matters.
Legal and safety reasons: when we believe disclosure is required by law, legal process, or to protect the rights, safety, or property of the Clinic, our users, or others.
The Site and its providers use cookies and similar technologies to operate the Site, remember preferences, and understand usage. You can control cookies through your browser settings; disabling some cookies may affect Site functionality.
When you subscribe, we use your email to send Clinic news and updates. Every email includes an unsubscribe link, and you can opt out at any time. Unsubscribing stops newsletter emails; we may still contact you about an active inquiry or matter.
We retain personal information for as long as needed to fulfill the purposes described here — to respond to your inquiry, provide services, operate the newsletter, and meet legal, administrative, and educational requirements — and then delete or de-identify it in the ordinary course. You may request deletion as described below.

The Site is intended for adults and is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us information, contact us and we will delete it.
We and our providers take reasonable measures to protect the information we collect. However, no method of transmission or storage over the internet is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
